Here’s today’s TimesCast, about the individual mandate (sorry for non-embededness; the Times is particular about its material).
Not that anyone here doesn’t know all of this already – it’s just worth reminding each other again and again that conservatives came up with the individual mandate that they are now attacking in the Supreme Court, and that the very Republican candidates who argue with such great froth against it today once supported it and, in one case, implemented it. The hypocrisy is remarkable.
This decision could go either way, but the one thing we can be confident of is that it will be a 5-4 split, or 6-3 at best. That’s sad. It’s hard to overestimate the significance of this decision, for tens of millions of Americans today and for hundreds of millions of Americans tomorrow, and it will come down to the opinion of one or two people who don’t get out much. Those checks and balances at work!
